Foreword

Welcome to the sixth edition of SPOT ON Integrated Photonics! This has been another exciting year for our field, at TU/e and beyond.

In the following pages we report some of the research topics we are working on, but also important developments from our university and ecosystem partners. Semiconductors now take central stage in shaping research priorities and organisational structures. Bridging future chips and high-tech equipment is the core focus of the newly founded TU/e Casimir Institute, which incorporates the activities of the former Eindhoven Hendrik Casimir Institute, along with those of the High-Tech System Center and Future Chips flagship. The scope and ambitions of the new institute are discussed in detail in the dedicated article. Photonic chips are of course fully in the scope of the new Institute, and their development will be further fostered by the establishment of the PIXEurope European pilot line, to which TU/e provides an important contribution. Additionally, the PhotonDelta growth fund program has received a positive mid-term evaluation and preparations for the second phase (2026-28) are in full swing.

Besides these timely initiatives focused on photonic chip technologies, we also strive to expand our research scope and valorization footprint in selected application areas, from data communication to biosensing. An important instrument to realize the application potential of integrated photonics is the European PhotonHub PHACTORY project, through which we can offer fast-track access to our expertise and technology to interested companies. The expertise of the TU/e research groups can be applied to develop not only chip technology, but also systems based on those chips, with significant economic and societal impact. We are looking forward to collaborating with partners in our region and beyond to realise this potential.
